Arrived in Nimes last night and had a few hours to sightsee before dinner. Nimes has amazing Roman ruins. The arena was built in 5 A.D. and is still used today for things like bull fights, concerts, motocross events... The Roman temple in the center of town is also quite amazing. Over the centuries it's been used for everything from a horse stable to city government offices. Today it houses a 3-D movie theater showing some sort of gladiator movie. We just enjoyed it from the outside. Pics have been added to the album "Free & Easy in France".
Nimes has another place in history that everyone will recognize. A certain fabric was invented here. It was said to be "de Nimes" (from Nimes), which has been shortened and is now known as denim.
The bike group is all together now. We had a great dinner last night, then most went to sleep off their jet lag. Today is the first day of cycling from Nimes to Arles. I'm excited to put my panniers on a bike instead of carrying them around by hand as I've been doing for the last several days!
