Le Mistral - thats what the wind is called that blows down from the north across Provence. It's not supposed to happen at this time of year, so I guess we're just 'lucky'. The ride up to Les Baux included some of the hardest riding I've ever done. The grade or the wind alone would have been manageable, but together there were sections where it was everything I could do to stay upright. At the very top, the wind blew Anne and Frank off their bikes. Luckily neither was hurt. Once over the top things got much better as we were more sheltered from the wind and the rest of the day was pleasant if a little long for tired legs.
Les Baux is an 11th century town at the top of Les Alpilles (or little Alps). It's beautifully preserved, if a little touristy. Coming down from Les Baux, we arrived in St. Remy which is famous for two things - a well preserved Roman city (Glanum) and the insane asylum where van Gogh went after he cut off his own ear.
Our evening was spent at a restaurant called La Colline on top of a hill in the middle of Cavaillon. As we walked up to the restaurant, the moon was rising over the mountains on one side of the city and a brilliant sunset was happening on the other side. To top that off, the restaurant was fantastic! An amazing end to a tough day!
