The Syllamo Mountain bike trail system is comprised of stacked loops making over 50 miles of singletrack. We decided to do a 14 mile loop using a shared hiking trail to access it. After some bumbling we rode the yellow trail spur and saw three razorback hogs running through the woods. Very unexpected. Next we went up hill for over a mile. So steep it was a hike a bike. Once we reached the trail we realized why we had not seen any other bikers. It was 104 degrees with 99% humidity and the trail was overgrown.
They have a plant called a Prickley Ash which is a super stinging plant that burns like a stinging nettle. This plant had thorns on the stem, leaves, and trunk. I caught it on the inside of my elbow joint and I will have this wound for weeks.
After about four miles of Mountain bike specific trails Jason and I looked at each other and asked the same question as we glistened with sweat from head to toe. 'Are you having fun?' We both answered 'No.' We abriviated our ride to six mile by creating a loop off of the hiking spurs.
The trail looked a lot like PA, but with crushed limestone instead of shale. There were some technical sections that would make you think, but nothing we would have walked. I would like to check this place out again in the spring or fall.
