The Thai phrase of the day is La Korn. Meaning goodbye. Fitting being that we're saying goodbye to Koh Samui today.
For our last day yesterday Rick and I decided to enjoy the beach, rest and relax. We had the most unbelievable beach day. It was the clearest day we have had so far - the skies were so blue and water so clear. I couldn't stop taking pictures. We really can't get over the beauty of Samui. It truly combines the best aspects of different beaches we've visited into complete perfection. We spent the day in and out of the water just soaking in our surroundings. I have never been so relaxed (miss type a actually became at least an a minus for the day).
For lunch I had the fish of the day which were grilled tiger prawns. Rick decided to order the noodle soup and was extremely happy with his decision. The soup was actually similar to a Vietnamese noodle soup I've made us at home except with the authenticity my Italian skills cannot provide;). It is a fish based soup with different seafood, noodles, scallions, peppers, and cinnamon. They serve it with different condiments so you can make the soup as sweet, savory, or spicy as you like. Of course my boy went ultra spicy!
In the afternoon we had appts at the spa but didn't want to leave the beach because it was such an amazing day. So the spa came to us! We got foot massages on the beach. I feel a little like a spoiled diva as I write this but it's our honeymoon after all!
For dinner there was a beach BBQ that all resort guests had been invited to. The BBQ was serving up authentic Thai style seafood and included entertainment - music, dancers, and fire spinners! We watched them set up for the bash all afternoon and were so excited. We decided to grab a drink before the BBQ up at the hillside bar to watch the sunset. It was the most beautiful sunset we saw since we've been in Samui. Rick always says the best sunsets are when it's slightly cloudy. And he is right! There was a storm in the distance which made the cloud formations and colors of the sky absolutely breathtaking as the sun went down.
We struck up a conversation with a couple next to us. They were from Denmark and have a really fascinating life. They live in Thailand half of the year, Denmark the other half, and own their own business making container liners for shipping. Their business is global, they have 500 employees, and they do a ton of traveling. Just as we were about to head down to the BBQ,the storm moved in and it began to downpour. We got word that they were canceling the BBQ:( So our new friends invited us to join them for dinner instead. I guess they found us equally as fascinating! As a group we decided to eat off of the southern Thai tasting menu. It was fun to try a bunch of different dishes and we had great conversation all night. At the end of the evening we hugged Jaruwan goodbye (she wouldn't be working in the am) and said goodbye to our new friends. Our buggy took us home and waiting on my bed was a bracelet make of flowers. These little gifts and gestures have really made our experience so memorable.
The wai or pra-nom-meu is the hands together prayer like gesture the Thai people use as a greeting, expression of thanks, or sign of respect. The movement of the hands to the level of chin, nose, or face is dependent upon whom they're greeting. It is not necessary for foreigners to return the wai but rather just acknowledge it with a greeting in return.
In preparation for leaving this amazing place we felt we wanted to give our wai, and proper thanks. We wrote Jaruwan a thank you note, left our feedback and thanks with the manager, and personally said goodbye to Orn, Ben, Pam, and all of our new Thai friends. They were all there to waive us goodbye as we got into our van to the airport this morning. I cried. I'm such a baby. But I will never forget this special place.
As a souvenir I bought a replica of the keychain that was the chain to our room keys while we were here. It's a little brass monkey. Rick thought it was silly because it's weighs about 5 lbs and isn't the most practical keychain in the world. But I don't care. It will bring nothing but a smile and amazing memories every time I see it.
La Korn Samui! Sawasdee Bangkok! On the plane now and ready for our next adventure!
