I don't know where to start. Today we packed to much Bangkok into the day it was ridiculous. If you want to see Thailand or for that matter, any country in Asia, use trails of indochina to arrange it. All day today, trish and I had a driver and our own personal tour guide. This made me very happy because we were on our own schedule. If we didn't care for a certain spot, we'd just leave. Plus the added bonus of no overcrowded buses with European backpackers.
We saw the reclining buddha, temple of the dawn and the emerald Buddha at the royal palace. At the first stop, we witnessed the Buddhist monks in prayer, mostly chanting, and it was pretty cool. Then we saw the reclining Buddha which was 160 feet long lying on it's side. Apparently he gave up his nirvana as a sacrifice for the people and that's why he's reclining. After that we saw some other temples and when we got tired of taking our shoes on and off and in some places putting pants on over my shorts, we went on a boat ride through the canals. This was fun to see. We took a longtail boat, where the engine is basically the steering wheel, and the propellor extends some 20 feet behind the boat. Think of a glorified dingy. We stopped somewhere in the cnanals, where our guide bought some bread from a local off the side of the river. Then she tossed some in the water and the catfish went crazy. There were hundreds of huge catfish, I guess about 15 to 20 pounds each, climbing over one another for the bread.
After that we headed back to port and went for a tuk tuk ride. A tuk tuk is basically a scooter with a seat and cover attached in the back. It was kind of uneventful and we eventually got tired of smelling bus fumes.
Finally we arrived at the flower market shush was really cool. There is actually a decently thriving economy for flowers here. Hundreds of flower vendors selling any kind of flower you could imagine. We bought a few flowers even though we aren't going to bring them home for obvious reasons, but they were so cheap we figured why not.
Then our guide took us to lunch. I have no idea the name of the place, but apparently it's where the upscale locals go for lunch. Mainly government officials, military and police. As part of our tour we get lunch included and usually on these types of tours, we get some crappy buffet. Our guide ordered a la carte, every delicious Thai dish you could imagine. We had Tom yum soup, green curry, pad thai, rice noodles, flat noodles, rice (of course you can't have a meal here without rice). And other dishes. Our guide was stuffing us. She was laughing at us, but kept ordering more and more, and when we told her no more, she ordered more, laughed and made us eat everything. It was so much fun, delicious, but way too much food. I don't know how the Thai people are all so skinny eating like that.
One other thing to note, dried fish is the most putrid smelling thing you can imagine. At one point we walked through an area of a market that specializes in drying dish. I started jogging to get away because it was so bad. Imaging Hoboken when the sewers flood, times 100.
So were getting ready to go to the managers reception here at the mandarin oriental. After that were gonna eat dinner at a seafood restaurant here. Mainly because we need a small break from Thai food. Then were going to cirocco which is the restaurant in the hangover 2. The view is supposed to be beautiful and hopefully itbwi
