Hello Again.
Some time since our last Blog. Having left 80 mile beach we headed to Pt Hedland and stayed there for 2 nights (Not a great Tourist mecca but we can say we have been there). Here Trent discovered that the Fishing Rod Bag on the roof of the car was missing and has either fallen of the roof or been stolen either way most of the fishing gear is gone and we are now waiting on an insurance claim to replace. From Pt Hedland we ventured inland to Karijini National Park, what a surprising location an oasis in the middle of what looks like a drought ravaged area. we spent 2 days here walking the gorges and swimming in the freshwater pools (bloody cold water).
On to Tom Price for a couple of days, arriving in the town we noticed a sign saying Free Chiropractic Clinic from Macquarie University, needless to say we were ready for an adjustment after 3+months on a caravan bed.Nic was treated for close to an hour (must have all number of ailments as she approaches 40). Got some rain and strong winds at Tom Price which caught us by surprise so a midnight dash was required to secure the awning and bring things undercover. Did the 4WD to the top of Mt Nameless ( the highest Vehicle access point in WA).
Onwards to Exmouth after a roadside stop in a huge roadside area were we were able to have a nice fire and relax. We planned 10 days at Exmouth as this would be a great location to explore the Ningaloo reef and do some fishing (When I get the fishing gear replaced). Staying at the Lighthouse CP as it is closer to the Cape Range NP where the snorkelling is amazing. However we do not have mobile or internet access here so we need to venture up to the lighthouse to get reception and check e-mails. Lachlan was able to log into the online school on one morning from the lighthouse which was a bit different. Have enjoyed a number of activities here being snorkelling at Turquoise Bay, Glass Bottom Boat tour, Yardie Creek Gorge Walk, Whale Watching Tour etc.
Turquoise Bay is unbelievable with large fish swimming at your feet at the shore and the reef about 30mtr from the shoreline. We did the Drift Loop snorkel where you enter the water up the bay and let the current drift you down over the reef and exit the water at the other end of the bay. At present we have a cold snap of weather in Exmouth with temp around 20 deg for the past couple of days and consistent drizzly rain which makes it a little frustrating to get out and do much. However we will venture back to Turquoise Bay again as we love this spot.
The Whale Watching cruise was great with Humpback Whales everywhere, a photographers dream ( although we felt a little inadequate with our camera compared to the huge lenses of the other cameras). A great trip to do when the weather is not so good as the whales seem to be more playful on the overcast days.
Replaced some fishing gear yesterday as could not wait for the Ins Co. as they would not be providing outcome of our claim until after we left Exmouth. Ventured down the beach in front of the Lighthouse at low tide and cast from the reef edge, within 10 mins I had my 1st catch a 500grm white Seagull, after much effort we managed to remove the hook from it's beak and release it back to the sky. We will be staying in Exmouth a few more days as we are unable to get a site in Coral bay until the 26th Aug.
The days of 30deg+ days are well behind us now as we head south, the shorts etc will be packed away and the warmer clothing back out.
Thanks to everyone who has left messages fro us on the Blog it is great to hear from you all.
Bye for now
Trent & Nic
