Place: Enroute to Bermuda
Wind/Weather: SE 20 to 25 knots, sunny
Title: Day 2 at Sea
I got a good 5 hours sleep last night and woke up at 0530 for my 0600 watch.
The sun was coming up and it looked like a nice day ahead. I hand steered for about an hour and noticed that there was a fair bit of weather helm.
After my watch I busied myself doing dishes and cleaning the galley. Then I fixed a couple of cabinet doors so they wouldn't bang open.
Martyn caught another fish, type unknown but it was a flatter type like a sunfish. The skipper, who used to be a cook in the Merchant Marine, cleaned, filleted it, and stuck it in the fridge.
The wind has been unbelievably steady at 20-24 knots and our boat keeps charging ahead. The skipper says that this is the wettest boat he has ever sailed. Me too but he has sailed many more boats than I have.
Susy is sleeping in the for peak which is quite spacious. Unfortunately it is also leaking water from the port holes and is quite wet.
The skippers bunk on the starboard has a leak where the forestay comes through the bulkhead. Martyn is on the port side of the salon and he also has a leak from the main mast stay.
I am sleeping in the pilot bunk by the chart table and it is the only dry bunk aboard. But it is like sleeping in a coffin for all the room that it provides. Still, better than being wet.
We have to manually pump out the bilges twice a day and pour ammonia in to keep the mosquitoes from breeding. The skipper has been ravaged by the little beasties. I killed about two a day since we left.
The skipper cooked tonight and treated us to Spegetti Bolognaise. It was very entertaining to watch him cook. Very efficient and purposeful.
And the results were very good too.
