Trailor on Tour
Yesterday I forgot to elaborate as to the significance of the present pictured, which I received from Maria and Alan, although Richard was sent the blueprints to ensure it turned out ok.
When I met up with Maria, she was more excited to see how many "feminine hygiene" items I had packed than she was to see me! Before I left England it was a bit of a joke that I would need an entire backpack for them as I had no intention of getting caught short prior to reaching relative civilisation. Fortunately I had unknowingly packed enough for Maria as well, hence the packet in the photograph. Richard was dispatched to buy said items and actually didn't do a bad job, considering.
He also made the small implement on top, to very specific instructions from Maria. If you can't make it out, it is a nail which has been driven through beer bottle tops, so that when you shake it, it makes a certain noise. For the remainder of this story, you will have to see me in person, but suffice it to say that I laughed lots when I opened it on Christmas morning.
I also had a strange experience earlier when I asked whereabouts something was in KMart, only to be told that it was in the far corner next to Manchester!! It seemed a bit of a long way to go for a book, so I asked the girl in a very quizical voice "Manchester?", to which she replied, "bed linen and towels, etc". Don't quite know where that term came from, but mighty glad I cleared that one up, so I'll know for future reference.
Yesterday I went to see The Motorcycle Diaries at the local cinema, which is based on the diaries written by Che Guevara (spelling?) and his friend who travelled around South America in their youth. Stunning scenery - it was like a tourist advert for the whole area.
Today I went to see Team America in the city centre, on Robin's recommendation and he was right, I did laugh lots. It is a spoof puppet film, in the Thunderbirds mould, but really takes the p**s out of many American movies where they save the world.
On a more sombre note, I'm worried about Keren (the girl I met in Perth) as the last time I heard from her she was in Thailand and thinking of heading to Myanmar, both of which were hit badly. I have been unable to reach her on her phone and have not had a reply to my e mails. Also, the friendly locals we met when staying on Nai Yang Beach in Phuket. Many of them had huts on the beach and the bungalows we stayed in were only a matter of metres from the sea. The man who owned the complex was actually getting married just after we left, but we were invited to the wedding. I know that Alan and Maria have e mailed the hotel, so we shall have to wait and see.
Tomorrow we will be going to see the fireworks in the harbour, along with a few million other people!! If you're only here for one New Year, I think it really is obligatory and it is supposed to be spectacular. So you'll have to wait for the photos, S xx
