s*** flight with Virgin Australia, five and half hour flight with no entertainment and only one complimentary drink with our little meal and the chicken was awful. Big expectations met by disappointment...
It was absolutely pissing it down in Brisbane, I mean it was bouncing off the floor! Landing was bad enough in it god knows what take off will be like!
We had coffee sachets and a tea bag in our bag and found some hot water so a free cuppa for the early morning and Ellie opened the bag of sweets haha.
An Australian woman came up to us and asked us if we were going to Fiji today because she wanted to do a survey on the flight of European women, she knew we weren’t from Australia because (and I quote) “I knew you were European because your burnt, Australians don’t tan their skins”. Ahhh... Kay! Thanks! I just came back from the toilet thinking I looked pretty damn tanned thank you very much. My face must have looked an absolute picture because Ellie could barely stop herself from spitting her biscuit crumbs out.
We aren’t sure we want to go to New Zealand now if it’s this cold there. We were Baltic! Its the coldest I’ve been since December last year... but you know, it’s New Zealand and we’re almost there so why not...
Breaking News:
With only 36 days until her 27th birthday, Beth just found another grey hair growing on the side of Ellie’s head and with another one in the lower parting of her head. Shes distraught! I’m sure a few biscuits will ease the blow.
The flight was much better turbulence wise anyways. Still budget airline with no tele and a crappy little meal but it got us here in one piece! The immigration was none existent really, we just had to scan our passport in the electronic scanner and there weren’t any queues, absolutely fantastic! (I hate queues.) but, we didn’t get a stamp in the passport which is a little annoying because I have an addiction to those things!
Within half an hour we were out of the airport and met Amy that was picking us up as we’re stopping with her and her parents for the first two nights in Howick just outside of Auckland city. They offered to put us up as they’re friends of friends from Griffithstown who emigrated here 11 years ago.
I already fell in love with the place when we were flying in, the turquoise waters around all the islands and the coast of Auckland looked incredible and it were so many mountains or old volcanoes everywhere. And so green!!
Very strange driving in a country where people use the traffic light system, stop at pedestrian crossings and indie by the rule book. It was a mixture of being in the UK but with less traffic and being in the US with the traffic signals and signs and the houses. Every house is different in size or design and shape, mostly made out of wood.
They live almost by the sea, you can see the coast from their house. It was beautiful! They completely renovated the place, it has a cracking hot tub fire pit in the garden and we had our dry own little room with en-suite.
We chilled for the evening and went for a walk up to the little town to the ATM (another currency to get our head around, although not too difficult compared to the others).
My bag must have been sat outside on the runway in Brisbane because it was absolutely ringing wet when I got it so I had to try and dry most things in it, I’ll be changing their back garden into a Chinese laundry tomorrow when the sun is out! Nothing like making yourself at home lol.
Sally and Amy went out to a concert in the evening and Ash watched the rugby, we tried to plan a little of our route around NZ but it’s proving to be a little difficult with this bus. Tomorrow we’ll be popping into the office to speak to someone because that’s way easier.
Not so early night tonight considering we have a long walk tomorrow, they suggested we do the coast to coast walk around 16/17km through Auckland so that we could see and do a lot of the tourist points. I couldn’t wait to get in that bed with a big fluffy duvet, I’m pretty sure we will die when we go to bed, shattered again as usual.
