Not a bad sleep considering my head was right by the door and the silly girl underneath me decided after lying on her bed since 6.30pm that at midnight she couldn’t find her purse so turned the main lights on (we are on top bunk, teaching distance from the light bulb) she then continued to throw her stuff around looking for it and rattle the bed as if it was going to pop out of the mattress! The ‘sorry this is really important’ schpeel didn’t work on me. I was peeved right off.
Didn’t sleep overly well but up at 7.30am to get a coffee and head for the bus to hot water beach. I shook myself down the ladder wasn’t trying to make myself quiet that’s for sure.
Auckland must have had rain last night because the floor is wet but it’s super quiet because its Saturday. We’ve been here a full week and my name has officially been changed from Beth (uk name) to Bart (Asian name) now to Bith (NZ name) who would of thought ‘eth’ would be so difficult to pronouns outside of the British tongue?!
The journey through the Coromandel forest park was nothing but beautiful. Still confused by the scenery that there are palm trees and bamboo living amongst fur trees and other trees I don’t know the name of but live in the UK aswell. Most of the mountains have boulders that have rolled down them I’m guessing from years of the volcanoes spitting them out. The hills are ridged from where the grass has grown over the top of volcanic ash and rocks.
They are however correct when they say there are way more sheep in this country than people, with cows a very close second in population. I’m very sure of it! They are bloody everywhere with big one or two houses dotted in amongst fields for miles. It’s pretty nice not seeing that many people actually. We always seem to mess with things and make a scenery ugly in one way or another. (I mean with rubbish and/or buildings, not peoples faces!)
We stopped in a little town called Tairua to get groceries and have a pee before heading to the hot water beach holiday park because there was only that there, no groceries, no ATM or gas station. Just hoping that when they promise the matches are on tonight it’s a good signal. All blacks V Ireland quarter finals! Oh and that crap team England V Australia - come on the Aussies!
So we are at hot water beach, obviously next stop is the beach to find some hot water!
The volcanic springs under the ground spurt boiling hot water up to the ground so you can dig a hole; sit in it with hot water. Only you have to dig it first with a mini shovel haha!
The hole was successful, we got it pretty big and deep only the after going into it was freezing. Trust us to pick a spot where there weren’t any springs! There we people surrounding us bathing in water that had steam coming from it because it was that hot. We gave up and moved onto to another hole (pre built, water already in it). Noticed that these pools have little water ways going into them.
This hole was warm! Finally! Ellie got wiggling her bump into the hole, digging herself deeper with her hands. She was like a pig in s***. I don’t know how she gets sand in so many places! It gets everywhere, even in her hair. Urgh no couldn’t have it in my hair - wet gloopy sand stuck in my hair. No thank you!
I actually burnt the top of my toes when we moved closer to the stream of water coming into the pool and trying to dig it deeper. You wouldn’t believe how hot it was, everyone was red from heat getting up out of the pools. It was quite a bizzare scene seeing loads of people digging holes in the sand to sit and roll around in them for a little bit of hot water, using the sea as their freezing cold shower to get in and out of a jacuzzi or steam room.
Ellie wasn’t quite sure why when she got up out of the pool there was sand running down her legs from her costume, she looked like she had a full nappy on haha! Obviously because you were wiggling your bum around in the sand for the last hour and half! Haha.
As much as it was lovey I couldn’t wait to get into that warm shower and get all this sand off me, more sand in my costume than I thought. The sand won, I was unable to get anywhere near enough amount of sand out of my costume to keep it from the bin. RIP orange costume that makes my boobs look great and is exactly the right colour to compliment my tan...
Our rooms were so much nicer than that bloody nomads in Auckland. There were only 5 of us in our 7 bedroom room. There were two rooms per cabin with a small corridor in between them where we had two showers and two toilets, and a communal kitchen for all four cabins in the middle with seating areas. It was the Kiwi experience’s own part in the park. Another company had only a piece of land where they camped. That would not have been for us, it’s bloody freezing up here tonight!
Ellie’s Guacamole mashing was a good star tonight whilst I cooked the chicken and chopped the veg sticks for tomorrow’s lunch then time to watch the rugby!!
