Another cloudless, sunny day... New Zealand you are spoiling us!
Thankfully we didn’t have a super early morning up and out to river valley lodge so we weren’t feeling too tired - yet!
It was a long drive today but broken up a little because we had a two hour hike stopover in Tongariro National Park up to the Taranki Falls which was in amongst Mount Doom and Mount ruapehi and both of them still had snow on the peaks which made the scenery look absolute spectacular, the photos you see in the brochures - that’s what it looked like but trying to get the camera to catch the same thing your seeing with the naked eye is impossible (with our cameras anyways) the camera doesn’t give any of it justice! It’s so green, and the lakes are crystal clear and then the back drop is blue sky and white topped mountain peaks. It’s beautiful!
We have gone from teletubbie land to mountains, lakes and volcanoes with snow on the top of them; the scenery is drastically changing!
Our last stop was to river valley lodge, in the middle of nowhere. The furthest inland we could ever be in the whole of New Zealand, surrounded by huge mountains we were in the 4th best white water rafting lodge in the world. (Not that me and Ellie were doing any of the grade 5 rapids this time around) the lodge was still pretty cool. We had to dump our bags on the back of a mini truck and walk down to the lodge by the river because he bus couldn’t get any further than where it had parked.
It was so pretty down there! It used to be a big farming house but now it’s been adapted to a lodge. We were in the upstairs room of the main house that had the biggest log fire in the middle of it. Our room had a partitioning wall going up the middle of it that didn’t quite reach the ceiling and either side of the wall it had 16 bunk beds in two rows (one row on top, one row on the bottom). This was going to be a fun night if someone snores or farts...
Most people paid extra for the roast dinner but we cooked chicken fajitas which were yummy! Then we all watched the terrible disastrous game of that crappy English team beating the all blacks in the semi final of the World Cup.
Everyone seemed to get a little rowdy and very very drunk on happy hour wine which wasn’t very cheap at $20 per bottle for dry white wine that didn’t taste very nice either. Haha! Not quite sure what was in the wine but it gave the girls enough energy to be loud, squeaky, screechy and scream a lot until 3am in the bedroom.
That was fantastic, it really made a few of us happy....
