Neither of us slept last night until at least midnight, we were shattered this morning. I could barely open one eye at 9am.
Our healthy breakfast from the supermarket shop yesterday and very slowly got ready with one eye open to go up to the treaty grounds on the free bikes from the hostel.
We managed to dodge the rain on the bike across the sea front, it was actually a little warmer today thankfully. Ellie just about managed to keep her balance on the bike, we both looked hilarious with our helmets on that we subconsciously chose the same colour helmets as our coats.
The treaty grounds had loads of history, it’s the first place the British took land in New Zealand and signed a treaty with the Maori’s, in the early 1800’s so they became apart of the British colony and also gained their independence as a country.
It was pretty cool, they did a few Maori dances for us, a few looked like a haka dance but I’m not sure it was the exact same one. Such a different culture to what we have been used to seeing in Asia! They’re language is very different to listen to compared to any other I ever heard.
We got back on the bikes and again dodged the rain, they’re right when they say everyone just populated the cities and not the areas outside of it because this place is dead. It’s seems like a Sunday morning at 6am, we only passed about ten cars all day.
Prepped lunch for tomorrow and had a late lunch at the hostel before we monged out on the sofa, watched sex in the city and watched the rain come in (thank god we weren’t on the bloody bikes)!
Warm shower and hopefully Ellie puts her feet in an iodine bath because they absolutely stink! She could kill rats with them... poooooey!
Let’s hope we sleep a little better tonight because we have an early morning bus trip tomorrow up to Cape Reinga.
