Oh what a sleep! A solid 11.5 hours I had last night and the room was so dark this morning which made t extra hard to wake up!
A decent shout by us for doing the Hooker trail yesterday though because my god was it raining this morning! You couldn’t see any of the mountain tops through the cloud and rain.
What a great feeling of satisfaction knowing you had the best day yesterday with the weather and it didn’t stop us doing anything we came up here to do! Tick tick tick on that bucket list!
We headed off for lake tekapo at around 10.30am, Mary and Helle we’re going back to Wanaka and Queenstown so this was our farewell until next time! We would see Helle in Singapore and Mary in Cardiff maybe in January when she’s visiting a friend! It will be weird not seeing them! They’ve been travelling with us since Auckland!!
The drive wasn’t so far this morning down to lake tekapo, we got in around 12pm and winged it on the accommodation. The lake front backpackers that we would haves reserved space for on the kiwi bus (if we were using the bus today) was showing as fully booked online everywhere so we thought we would just swing by when we arrived... low and behold they had availability for a dorm room! But no check in until 2pm. At least we beat the kiwi bus and we could get ourselves checked in before they arrived which we knew was 2pm looking at their app.
So we had to kill time, in this tiny tiny town! Of course you find a coffee shop for a flat white and a chai latte! The greedy cow cafe was very cute, but we couldn’t sit there for two hours.... so I took Ellie into her favourite shops - souvenir shops! Haha.
A walk around those and down by the lake before we spotted the kiwi bus and headed back to the lodge before they arrived to get the best beds - bottom bunk! Nobody wants to climb those awful ladders up to that top bed, they’re a nightmare.
Result! We got the beds we wanted, a lovey hostel with a cracking view of the ice blue lake and pine trees lining it. This place seems very new!
We were going to do the natural pools and the star gazing package for tonight but the weather forecast is looking pants and we aren’t paying 99$ for that if the weather is crap.
So we headed down the road to the spring heated pools for the afternoon to beat the s***ty weather coming in tonight and enjoy this little bit of sunshine we have at the moment. One pool was closed so we had discount plus the sauna and steam room included because we were on the kiwi bus - bargain!
Absolutely lovely chilling in the pools (bloody hot pools!) and dunking in the ice plunge pool in between the sauna and steam room. Three hours in all of that had definitely taken it out of us! We were shattered again! Back to the hostel to watch the world go buy in the living room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake.
The wind was so bloody strong and the gusts were sweeping the dust, sand and pine cones all over the little road and into the hostel windows. A few times we all looked at each other to think oh crap the windows are going to smash in!
