8 hour shore excersion today, but sounds like a lot of variety. Thermal springs, gondola and luge. Cannot wait to try luge, guy from Gullivers (our tour firm) said he had tried it - scary ride like in bob sleigh except you sit up and have handle bars to slow you down!
So coach trip took us through Rotorua and first stop was a muddy lake which was boiling and giving off smelly steam, then off to Lady Knox Geyser. It erupts at 10.15am every day, so we got to see that. But you have to put soap in the spout to make sure it is ready for tourists. And then it takes five to ten minutes before it erupts about 15m.
After that we went on an hour walk around all the thermal pools and stuff - sone pools green, some orange and some blue. All to do with the specific chemicals involved. This place would be good for a school trip . . .
Next we did a drive-by of bath house and then onto the gondola up a mountain. At top were loads of things to do, 4D experience, luge etc. School hols in NZ so very busy and not enough time to use our ticket for 3 rides. Luge went half way down mountain with 3 different courses to suit all ages. Then to had to get a ski lift back up. That was another queue and the luges automatically clipped under lift so they went back up with you. I ended up on scenic route, yuck - too slow. Dad went on the intermediate one (not allowed on advanced until your 2nd go) and he crashed overtaking a young lad.
A long drive back, over an hour. Old guy called Ward is driver who gives a running commentary, unfortunately he does not talk loud enough into mike and he could not work out how to turn it up.
Back to boat by after 4, one hour nap, one hour gym, then buffet! Yum
