The Wandering Rupa
Hi there :)
I've just noticed that the date line of my journal entries doesn't make chronological sense - this is because I have no idea what day it is half the time so we'll just have to try and make the best of it!
Hervey Bay is a really cute little place. We spent one night here before going on a self-drive tour of Fraser Island. Me, H and Emma have met two great girls - Jo and Dee - and we were all in the same 4WD together so the next few days were a good laugh.
Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island and it's got rainforest, freshwater lakes, dunes and a continuous stretch of beach. (More pub-quiz knnowledge there!) There are 9 of us in the jeep and we had two tents between us - cosy! We toured part of the island on the first afternoon but we had to time getting to "base camp" according to the tide so we were putting up tents and firing up the BBQ by 6pm.
I was chief BBQ-er and decided that - despite having had nothing to eat all day - it was a good idea to crack open the Goon while I sweated over chicken drummers and corn on the cob. IT WASN'T! Got very drunk and made a complete tit of myself, then spent the next day half-dead in the back of the jeep - it took until the third and final day to get me back to normal so I won't be drinking Goon again - EVER!
Fraser was so beautiful. Once you got over the annoyance of sand getting everywhere it was great. We had great weather and saw some amazing stuff.
Back to Hervey Bay and I - foolishly - had agreed to a drinking competition with one of the guys from the jeep-hire place. I was still feeling a bit wobbly from my Fraser antics and wasn't that keen but my pride overcame my common sense and off we went again. Luckily this guy was a bit of a lightweight and I won pretty easily - I'm sure my mother is proud of me! My prize was to be crowned "Queen of Hervey Bay" - and I did actually get a crown that the staff at the hostel fashioned from some wire coat hanger and a load of tinsel. This, of course, is going to stay on my head for the rest of my trip and beyond!
