So i've survived the first week of teaching!!!
For the fact that I haven't taught in over 8 months it wasn't so bad. The school here is rather disorganised though, on the Friday we had a staff meeting at the sister school in Cocentaina, which is about a 15 min bus journey from the town that I am in. Here we received all the books that we required for teaching all our different classes, and were given our time tables.
My timetable isn't soooo bad - get fridays off and don't work past 18.45, although I do start at 8 in the morn three days a week, which is a bit of a killer. So my first lesson, with 3 11/12 year old girls - turns out the book that I received for the class wasn't up-to-date so the listening exercise that I had them do wasn't the same, oh well we coped.
Second lesson - teaching in a nearby buisness where they test textiles, so the class is for adults. I thought I was informed that they would be advanced, and they had already started the book, turns out they were high intermediate and had never seen the book before.
Lesson three - teenagers who by the way are complete s***s!!! one guy decided to make paper airoplanes during the class, i couldn't get them to stop talking in Spanish, and most of them clearly didn't wanna be there. I could maybe understand this if they were 14/15 year olds, but NO these students are 17/18 and are trying to pass an exam to get into uni, I would be more than happy for advice on how to handle them. Oh and I also didn't have the right book for this class either.
Gotta love kids, i teach 4 different young classes, who range in age from 4 to 10, now i know how to handle them.
Things here haven't been as dramatic as the first week, and not as many unknown visitors, although we have had a few. I answered the door to two spanish girls, obviously my spanish hasn't come on enough to have a real conversation with them so my trusty flatmate was at hand. Mistake and a half!!! turns out they were jehovah witnesess and she spent about 30 mins trying to get them to leave. And who says being able to speak Spanish is a good thing lol.
I have start Spanish lessons though, with a guy called Javier. I meet him on a night out, when 2 much beer was involved. He is an Spanish/English teacher so we've agreed to do an exchange, which started on Saturday. Was alright, although we did do it in a bar/cafe place and was rather noisy. Sure it'll work out though.
not much else to report, apart from the weather has turned :( it rained yesterday whilst we were at a market/stall thing that was here cause for some unknown reason, that we still haven't found the answer to, it was a holiday. Tuesday is also a holiday, so not teaching then, gutted that my teenage class isn't on that day.
Alcoy is a really quiet town, where during seistas, which are from about 1 til 5 nothing is open, and the place is pretty much dead on a sunday, even the local supermarket doesn't open then, sure we'll find things to do on those days :S
