And we are off again!! Time to get out of cold rainy old Sydney town.
We took off on Hawaiian Airlines for the first 10 hour leg of our travels. We didn't really know what to expect from Hawaiian but they were really good. Leg room wasn't so great though, especially when the guy in front of me reclined his chair back for the entire flight, even during meal service. I was eating my meal with my tray under my chin ... kind of like a little piggy at a trough. Thankfully there were plenty of spare seats and people were laying across the seats all over the plane so Elstub laid down on the seats behind me and we tried to get some shut eye, some more successfully than others.
Our stop over was in Honolulu and stepping off the plane into the gorgeous sunshine and warm temperature was fantastic. We just wanted to stay there and defrost. We made our way through customs and headed straight for the customer service desk to see if there were any upgrades available ... happy days. Two first class seats together, thank you very much. The first class lounge wasn't what I had imagined but beats sitting with the plebs in the terminal. So we flew our second leg enjoying champagne on arrival, a three course meal on proper plates with our little tray set with a table cloth and everything. After dinner it was feet up, head back and sleeping in our comfy, roomy chairs. It was just like being at home and laying back on the smoky dawsons, all I needed was my little Ashlee Dawg on my lap and it would've been perfect. So this is how the other half live.
We arrived in New York to grey skies and rain ... This was supposed to be our summer, hot, shorts and vest top wearing holiday!! Obviously New York didn't get that memo because all the weather reports are saying they are having an unseasonably cold snap at the moment.
After an hour and a half making our way through traffic that puts Sydney to shame and a little bit of shuttle bus hopping we trudged through the streets to find our motel where they were very strict about the no check in until 3pm rule. Not good news to hear at 8:30am after over 24 hours of travelling time. Lucky we had spent the last 10 hours in first class or the guy may not have made it out alive.
The rest of the day was spent trying to kill time roaming the streets with no real destination in mind. By lunchtime we were both a little delirious and busting to get into the room. It was freezing cold, windy and raining so we did have to go back to our luggage and get a few more layers.
We got into the room at five past three, changed out of our wet gear and laid down on the bed. Lights out! You know you've had a good sleep when you wake up at 7:45 and don't know if its morning or evening. It was evening, so a little dinner and straight back to sleep. Day one ... Done.
