Sat - day 8
woke at 7 to a glorious sunny day - a bit of a mixed blessing. The plan today is for the luxury of a late start (10ish) and then an early finish (2ish) but we are going into the Yorkshire dales so we'll see. One thing is for sure, the thermals will continue to be redundant.
One of the main debates before the trip was how many clothes and tools to take. We haven't bought a lot of stuff either but our panniers are still really heavy and slowing us down. The answer would of course be a support crew to carry everything you might poossibly need. Maybe next time eh Helen?
One piece of equipment which weighs nothing and has been invaluable is ewans iPhone. It won't undo my love of maps (sad I know) but the ability to identify exactly where you are and the detail around has saved many a wrong turn. It has been especially useful at tops of big hills to make sure that you're not going to have to climb back up it to get on the right road. So the advice is dont go without one! (other products are available which perform the same function)
time to wake Ewan up and go get breakfast.
We had coffee and cake before cycling through the old mill towns north of Manchester. Some appeared gentrified and others look like the last 20 years have never happened. There were some tough climbs at first but then a brilliant 2 or 3 miles downhill at nearly 30 mph into burnley, adrenaline pumping.
Human interest bit now. We arrived at heather and David's mid afternoon after a scorching day. Isabella (4) and john (9 months) were playing in the paddling pool and we were fed, beered and showered. Isabella then had Ewan and I very organised and playing at shops. We ate at a pub in malham (the nearby cove is apprently famous amongst geologists) thenwent home and watched the champions league final before heading to bed.
