Thurs - day 6
it was a glorious day and I covered myself in petroleum jelly for places that I won't mention and suncream for the exposed bits, it was a one man oil slick! We cycled for an hour into Ludlow for breakfast where we had a coffee and pecan and banana loaf that was very agreeable and the calories are a benefit for once. It was more or less level terrain all day so we ate up the miles and arrived at our b&b just after 5. If you've been paying attention to the blog then you'll know the usual evening schedule - shower, change, a pint or 2 and back to write this. For the cycle buffs, skip this if you don't fall into this category
interesting fact 1
we stayed at welsh bricknor yha on Tuesday and it was full of people doing lejog mostly in 2 weeks ( we are taking a bit under 3). As this fortnight ends with a bank holiday giving an extra day to return home/recover it's a very popular time to do it. Everyone but us had all the latest bikesvand equipment - it felt like being the only boy in the class who has free school meals.
Interesting fact 2
you should have tyres pumped to at least 100psi when cycling which was a revelation to me, I hadn't given it a moments thought. Ewans tyres were at 27psi when they got checked in crediton so we bought ourselves a new pump.
All the non cycle buffs can continue Reading now.
If you have been Reading this to hear what agony my backside has been in you will have been dissapointed - I haven't though. Not wanting to tempt fate but apart from a slightly numb left buttock all is well in that department. Fate having been tempted, no doubt I'll be in agony tomorrow. Tomorrow we are navigating around Manchester so there has been much male orientated studying of the map this evening.
Fri - day 7
last night we stayed at a b&b on a farm near Crewe. The woman of the house waslovely but the place looked like it hadn't been decorated in about 40 years - everything was floral, carpets, wallpaper, curtains and ornaments. For someone as unobservant about such things, if I noticed it must have been extreme. The morning consisted of some pleasant chesire countryside and then navigating the outskirts of Manchester, not the most pleasant leg of the journey.
Inevitably my comments about lack of backside pain meant that I focused on that part of my anatomy and had some discomfort. The temperature was in the mid 20s in the afternoon which made the return of hilly roads harder to manage and we were glad to reach our destination just before 4. Our accomodation for the evening is a hotel and leisure club with 2 swimming pools, spa, sauna etc. Not that I used them, all I was good for was a shower and a quick nap.
The Friday night entertainment in ramsbottom (no jokes please) was a Thai meal, a pint in a local pub then off to sleep.
Tomorrow we visit my niece heather and her family in the Yorkshire dales - in a house that had previously been owned by bill bryson no less. The forecast is for 29degrees so it could be and interesting day. Tonight is the end of the first week and it has been a great experience.
