Now I awoke today with a smile on my face as it was beaming sunshine outside (hasn't happened much whilst being in Oz and NZ) so I thought I would be a proper tourist today and go everywhere! And that I did!
First I headed to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Much more impressive than others I've seen and a really good atmosphere, literally a little bit of sun brings people out in droves! From there I walked up to the Sydney Opera House. It was pretty cool altho not as big as I expected (not sure what I was expecting?!) I think sometimes photos ruin it for you as they make it bigger than it is. The Harbour Bridge was very impressive though!
From there I walked along Circular Quay where I grabbed some fish n chips, I was tempted by the BBQ Octopus but thought I better just go for plain old cod! And lovely it was too, and the birds enjoyed my leftovers, especially the 'Australian White Ibis' a white bird with a long black beak, I thought I was going to have an 'Emu' attack moment with him!
I then went to the Museum of Contemporary Art. I'm not really one for art galleries but this was amazing (and free!). Very strange exhibits, one in particular I will describe. A thai man made 365 papier mache models out of shredded thai bank notes. I'm not sure whether they were out of circulation or whether he had more money than sense, altho newspaper would have probably not had the same effect!
Then I climbed the bank to 'The Rocks' a cool part of the city, with many pubs, shops and an outdoor market. It was also the place where the European criminals were sent when they had commited crimes. It was here that they got jobs, started families and lived like a local. There was also a Discovery Museum where it gave further information about the area. I learnt a lot of things and it seems alien to think that if you committed a crime you would be sent to Australia, bit of an incentive to commit crime (be proud mother, I'm not just drinking!)
From there I climbed the Observatory Hill up to Sydney Observatory, I was a little tired at this point so happy to sit down and enjoy the view, and what a view it was, almost as good as the Skytower!
After all the touristy things, I felt knackered. 5 hours of walking had worn me out so I headed back to the hostel where I chilled, didnt drink and had an earlyish night!
