Day 15/16
Last night we had a lovely dinner in the local down the road with our friend cherished Martin Apples, his delightful friend Lindsey and her shy son Freddie (hope I got his name right) and early to bed, again.
Next morning at breakfast we tried to change our B&B for that night's stop because the owner was going to insist that Jake sleep in a stable and would not be allowed in the house. At the time of setting the whole trip up we couldn't find anything else available but we were hoping the recent bad weather might have increased the availability of more dog-friendly accommodation. This turned out to be a good hunch as we found a good alternative where Mr Jake could put his paws up after a long day in the basket.
We cluttered off rather late with 55 miles to go. The going was very tough with some major hills along the way which were a real challenge. Stopped for a coffee break at the Number8 cafe in Launceston, run by an enthusiastic cyclist who was enthralled to see us with Jake on a tandem! Photo opportunity for him as we set off.
After what seemed like an endless ride up the whole of Cornwall, up to the top of Bodmin Moor, we were treated to a fabulous vista across the whole county and, at last, a bit of a fabulous descent which, rather unfortunately and probably rather obviously, was quickly followed by more climbs. Arriving at a major junction we were so pleased when some old boys gave us directions to the nearest pub which included the words "go past Trago Mills" and "it's all down hill". Unfortunately a Trago Mills visit was avoided in case we bought anything in passing, double beds for £59.99 sounded like a great bargain. On passing it looked a little like Disney Land with gaudy statues everywhere. Good lunch was had by us and for Jake who had endless games of ball and Martin even had a snooze.
The next section was a bit of a slog especially as we got a puncture just before getting to trailer park land. Martin did a speedy and stirling job on the repair and we had a chat with a couple who were homeless but lovely with a very large bottle of cider and dog. The end of the day never seemed to come any closer but as always we did make it to our B&B and with big smiles on our faces. Only 40 miles to do tomorrow! Easy Peasy!
We're in the local round the corner as I type with a very hungry and sucked of all life Mr Wood, pictured, having to wait an hour for his dinner! A little short of humour but he's noshed some crisps and nuts and mellowing as time passes and as he chats to the very amiable landlady from 'up North'. The pub's saving grace is that they sell Shepherd Neame beers from our very own Faversham brewery.
Lots of love to you all xx Carine, Martin and Jakey-Dog
