Today was the day! La Tomatina was finally upon me and I was excited! Millie and I got up early to catch the busabout bus from in town at 7.15am. We got a free tshirt which was cool and hopped on the bus to head out to little town called Bunol. I was a bit worried because I had no closed in shoes to wear so I was stuck in my broken Havianas being head together by a bobby pin but id just have to tough it out.
We arrived and already the mood was so alive people who had driven there in cars and the music pumping from their speakers there were food stalls, and lots of people. The actual food fight was a ten minute walk right into the town to one narrow street. I was debating whether to take my camera because so many people said you lose everything in the food fight but I really wanted to get some action snaps so I risked it.
Millie and I bought a some food and of course sangria to kick start our day, nothing like an alcohol breakkie. We followed the crowd for about 10 minutes till we started to get to the street where it would all happen. Millie and I positioned ourselves just off to the side of the main street and sat abd waited.
It was only probably 9am at this point and the actual fight didn't start till 11 so we had a bit of a wait while the initial tradition of climbing the greasy pole began. So they have this tall pole that is completely greased up pole with a big ham at the top and the objective is to get that ham down,I don't think anyone got it this year or have for a few years.
By 10 I was busting for the toilet and Millie and I had to brave it across the crowd in the street to get to the other side, somehow managed although it was starting to smell like urine because it's so packed people were just peeing where they were..gross right?
After the toilet we didn't want to try crossing to the other side again so we stayed in the alley way. At 11 a gun was sounded and the fun began when the trucks started rolling in with 40,000 kgs of tomatoes all up. Locals in the trucks threw them into the crowd and after a while there was tomato everywhere, they ran water all through the street as well. Imagine being in a music festival mosh pit and then add tomatoes and people throwing them, then water gushing down the street making and ankle depth tomato soup. Guys were ripping people's top off,wet tshirts and shoes were being thrown around and everything possible was floating past our feet.
One hour later another gun sounded and the tomato throwing was "supposed" to stop of course I copped a few more tomatoes to the face and smushed in my hair as I slowly moved with the crowd to get out of the street and back to the bus. As you walk back up the locals stand on their balconies and hose everyone off,but because there were so many people Millie and I didn't bother. The bus had a container of water do I tried to remove the tomato as best as I could. On the bus I was asleep almost instantly tomato throwing definitely took it out of me! The smell got worse and worse on the way home by the time I got off the train and up to our room I was almost gagging,I really welcomed a shower.
After a shower it was siesta time. Millie had organized to hook up with Laura and Deans top deck group for the after party and dog the busabout one we were supposed to go to.
After a decent siesta we got ready and stopped in a little pub for a feed. Then we went to another bar for predrinks, jumped on a train and headed towards the beach and port to a club called Mist.
We partied with Laura and Dean and the rest of the top deck group until about 2 in the morning then got sold tickets to another club. We got ripped off a euro and the entrance staff almost didn't let us in (haha we aren't tourists at all) but it was worth the money as this place was THE biggest club iv ever been to it was like a palace. It was mid week so it wasn't packed but the part that was open was busy and they played the best rnb I was in heaven awesome song after awesome song.
At about 4.30 we called it quits and I was tucked up in bed by 5.30 am.
Had a crazy day but loved it !!
Over and out xx
