I am staying near Colaba and Narriman Point which is close to the tourist areas. For the first time since arriving in India, someone was able to give me a map and I am able to walk around freely. It is a 20-30 minute walk to the Gateway of India and the touristy Colaba Causeway, but I did it the day I got to Mumbai. Has a Bangkok feel to it with the stalls on the pavements selling clothes and other stuff to tourists. Had lunch at the Leopold Cafe which was established in 1871 and was attacked first when the Taj Hotel was bombed.
In the evening, as I was walking on Marine Drive to watch the sunset, it started raining and carried on into the night so I had to take a taxi back to the hotel. Fortunately, the taxis are metered here and I knew the road back to the hotel. The guys at the restaurant said the taxi should cost INR 25-30. It actually came out to 44 which was not bad at all.
Next morning, went on a "tour" of Mumbai with a driver and tour guide. The only thing of interest really that I saw was Mahatma Gandhi's home in Mumbai. The hanging gardens were not even worthy of a photo. I had already seen the gateway of India on my own so by 1pm (after 3.5 hours) I was back in the hotel. Had supper at Mondecar Cafe - they have a jukebox and people were selecting some golden oldie western music like Another Brick in the Wall and Don Mclean's Bye Bye Miss American Pie.
Next morning it rained so I only left the hotel shortly after 12pm. Did a lot of walking after a long time. Probably 10-15km and I could feel it in my legs.
