Day 6 Ketchikan
Last night after dinner we decided to try again to get some info on the zodiac tour. We lucked out and got a guy who'd done it twice, that in itself is a recommendation. He said it was fantastic so we booked it. The weather forecast was showers and 15C so not too bad.
This morning it was cloudy but not too bad. We had some breakfast and went to explore the town. Ketchikan is a fair bit bigger than Skagway but with the usual shops and pubs. As we wandered the weather seemed to get worse, constant rain and the wind was getting up. Pete forgot to take his baseball cap so his glasses were constantly getting wet. We found a store with 3 hats or beanies for $10 so got one baseball cap so he could see where he was going and for the other two we got an Alaska beanie each.
We found a wifi spot and managed to check in, do some emails and post a couple of blogs for the first time since we left.
We got back on board and got ourselves set to go on the tour but when we got back down there we found it was cancelled. We would've enjoyed it except for the weather so it's a bit of a relief when it was canned.
We went and checked out some shops. I've been looking for a leather jacket to replace my old one which is getting shabby. I found one, reduced to $199 from $550. I asked for a better price but they said no, it's already reduced heaps so I said ok ty and started to leave. The bloke who'd served me walked off but the guy who'd suggested the jacket that was perfect asked how I'd gone & I said it was perfect but too much he must've been the boss cos he spoke to the one who'd been serving me who then followed me and it had suddenly became $150. Bargain! Super cheap and I love it :-)
A jewellery store was advertising northern lights topaz which were kinda cool specially since we've now seen them twice. I got a small pendant and a ring for $60, they're different and fun.
We checked out a few more shops and bought a pocket knife for Rick and the same one for Pete.
The rain had really set in and it was quite miserable so we headed back for lunch.
I went back out about 3pm heading for the same cafe we'd stood outside of earlier. My plan was to buy a hot chocolate and do some more blogs and check emails. When I got there they'd shut so once again I stood outside just under an awning getting just a little of the persistent rain. I got the blogs up til today loaded and answered a few emails etc.
Back on board the weather was deteriorating even further. We set off in rough conditions with limited visibility about 5.45pm which was 15 minutes early perhaps trying to get out of the narrow harbour before it got any worse. Surprisingly the float planes were still buzzing in and out. As we left port one landed straight across the bow of our ship! What a daredevil lol
Before dinner we went down to the open deck on six and checked out the waves. Previously the calm ocean had been well below us but tonight it was well up, the waves swelling to just a few feet below us. We went back to check it out later and were the only ones on deck unless you count the nervy crewman who tried to keep an eye on us lol The view from the front of the ship on TV was just a white out, nothing to see here! According to the TV the waves were listed as over three meters. In our cabin on level ten we were rocking and rolling a bit. We had our balcony door open for some air and at one point when we opened the door to the hallway papers went flying out the door! Luckily just yesterday's copy of what's happening lol
