Day 5 cruising Glacier Bay
The rangers came on board at 7am for those wanting to got have an early chat to them, we stayed in bed lol I did take a peek out and there were a lot of chunks of ice in the water.
About 8am they began broadcasting over the loud speakers bits and pieces about what we were going to see today.
We passed a lot of smallish glaciers before we got to Marjory which is huge, 250' tall. The ship stopped here and did a very slow turn. We were just finishing breakfast so we went to the open deck on level 6. We could hear the glacier, sometimes rumbling like thunder and now and then a crack like a gunshot. We got some great photos and even a video of the calving. The largest piece we saw come off was half the height of the glacier so the equivalent of a 12 story apartment building! It created quite the splash and a small wave that we could feel rock the ship. Awesome :-) There were many icebergs littering the water at the base of the glacier.
Marjory is what they consider a healthy glacier, it's the ice behind pushing that causes the calving so far from receding its in fact static. They believe Marjory is the glacier that once filled the area we are cruising in as recently as 250 years ago.
Lots more glaciers as we cruised on.
