Stephen's Travels!
Hi Guys. Having an amazing time... Just got back from Fraser Island which is the largest sand Island in the world...It was soooo good. There was 10 of us in our own jeep. Myself...The Welshies...2 of Ceri's friends from Uni...Kate and Sarah and a random German guy who was really annoying but it was ok because we all had a great time. Before we left for Fraser we went and bought Llays and beach games. We looked funny and im sure we got known as the Hula Bunch, we didn't take them off for the whole 3 days!
There are no roads on Fraser so its all off road 4x4 sand tracks and beach driving. We were all drivers and took it in turns to experience the fun!
Fraser Is a Breading ground for the Tiger Shark! There the most deadly type! So the sea was a no go but they have amazing lakes within the island that are so similar to a beach...Amazing and were really good...
Tiger Sharks were not the only nature concern on the Island...Fraser is famous for its Dingoes...They are wild dogs that can be vicous. They hang around campsites to scavinge and although an attack is not likely we still had to be briefed on the brace position in case of any violent ones. The brace position was basically making your self look big and unafraid...Were we to see any Dingoes though???
High tides were a problem on Fraser...You were not allowed to drive through salt water in the jeep so the days had to be timed around the sea...Meaning that there were days when we had to set up camp at 2pm. On this day we decided to take a walk as we did not have the use of the 4x4. We went for a walk along the beach and headed towards another lake to spend a few hours there and see the sunset... good plan in theory but as we arrived to the lake after our 1 hour walk through the bush it started to piss it down and the sun went in. Within about 10 mins it was pitch black and we had to walk back with 1 tiny maglight between 10 of us! straight away there was mooving in the trees and we saw a massive Iguana thing... It really made me jump..I was also leading the group so i took the speed up a bit to get us back to the beach. There was so much more movement in the bushes that scared us all soooo much...we started to play a memory game to take our mind of what could have been around us...Me and Deb saw a Black small eyed snake in our path... I had no shoes on at this point but after that i was quick to put on the flipflops. We reached the beach again and we were all relieved until we got back to out camp... you guessed it...Dingoes. I was really scared but before we knew it we had all rememberd the brace position and were shouting to scare them off. We all had a laugh about it later and discussed how we looked like we were doing the thriller dance...all huddled together and looking s*** scared. I was a bit worried doing nature wees that night but a box of wine sorted that and quashed the nerves.
All in all fraser was great and one of my favourite parts in Australia ;)
