Today I went to the graduation of Koiyaki Guiding School, set up a couple of years ago by Ron Beaton. It trains carefully selected young Maasai to be extremely competent guides. When we arrived at the school a graduating student, Derek, enthusiastically showed us around. We were shown inside all the dormitories, classrooms etc and he proudly pointed out all the fire extinguishers! In one of the classrooms there were lots of displays on the desks, like you have on school open days in the uk. One desk was covered in rocks of various types (all labelled) including a few rocks that bore the label ‘unidentified rocks’. In case this wasn’t quite clear, Derek explained that no-one was sure what kind these rocks were! There were lots of skulls and bones of animals as well as dead spiders, lizards etc. One of the spiders had the hilarious label of ‘my I am so hairy’! The graduation ceremony finally began – I think everyone in Maasai land was there – there were so many people! There were lots of speeches, presentations of certificates and gifts, singing and dancing by the local schoolchildren etc. It was really nice. Three hours later it finally finished and we went to the veranda of a cottage of the under construction Wilderness Camp for lunch. The views are fantastic.
