I had a 10am flight to the Masai Mara, bound for Rekero Camp. However my new Kenyan mobile couldn’t receive calls or texts so I had no idea whether the camp knew I was arriving! Just before I boarded the plane I received a call from Gerard (whose family own the place) to say that he’d just picked up my messages but no-one could pick me up until late afternoon. I ended up having to go to Governor’s Camp, which is a couple of hours from Rekero, and hang out there for the day until someone could pick me up. It was good – I chatted to the staff and had lunch with a man who writes for Globetrotter’s travel guides.
Rekero is really nice. Its small – only seven guest tents which all overlook the river. There’s no running water but electricity, and I’m in a tent next to the office so I have wireless internet from my tent! All the staff are really friendly and Gerard and Rainee Beaton are usually around, sometimes with Charlie, an incredibly cute 21 month-year old-boy. Gerard was away when I arrived so Rob was running everything. The food’s great and you can nearly always see animals across the river. Generally my responsibilities include looking after the guests, checking tents, emailing the dry food orders etc.
