Stefanie's Travel Journal
Well, I'm on my way again. Tonight I leave on the second part of my world travels. My flights are kind of crazy: I leave Sacramento around 7:00pm Tuesday night and have a short layover in LA. Then on to Hong Kong. Then to Bangkok (I know, I was just there...) and then finally to Kathmandu, Nepal. I'll arrive in Kathmandu around 11:00 pm Wednesday night, CA time. It will be around 12:00 noon in Nepal on Thursday.
The time difference is roughly 12 hours and 45 minutes later in Kathmandu than in Sacramento. (Nepal chose to be on this strange time zone to be different from India which is apparently 12 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Sacramento).
I'll have less access to the internet on this trip but I wil try to give regular updates. The first part of my trip is a 2 week tour from kathmandu, Nepal to Tibet (Lhasa, China) and back with a stop at Everest Base Camp. To follow the tour itinerary, you can go to www.gapadventures.com and look up the tour with the tour code of IFRE (Tibet Unplugged) and see our planned agenda.
I needed to take a tour because the Chinese government will not allow independent travelers into Tibet. They want to ensure visitors are going to Tibet for tourism and not for political activism (Free Tibet) and they hope that requiring you to be part of a tour group of at least 4 people will do that.
At first I was not excited about the idea of the tour but this tour company looks great and came highly recommended (thanks Rebecca!) and it was nice that they took care of all the bureaucratic red tape it takes to get into China (4 visas/permits needed for the places I'm going).
Then after the tour I'll head over to Northern India (flying into Delhi) and go up to Dharamsala to see the Tibetan government in exhile and the Himalayas over in India.
So, more to come soon. See you all in October!
