Kim's European Journey
My time card at the internet cafe ran out earlier and we were getting ready to leave anyways.
So we went back to the pub after the National Gallery and then Rach and I walked to Virgin Records before heading back to the hostel. We went to dinner at this small restaurant and it was mediocre (?). All I wanted was something without fries. I can't even stand the sight of them at this point. So I ordered chicken and mushroom casserole (mom- not nearly as good as your chicken and mushrooms over pastry shells) BUT IT CAME WITH FRIES. UGHHHH. From there we stopped at a grocery and went to the pub where we met the Scottish people. Note to self: bars close at 11.
We were SUPPOSED to meet at 9:45 this morning, so Rach and I were up at 8 to take showers. However, we could only shower one at a time. So Rach took hers which was apparantly close to warm, but mine was freezing.... again. We are going to try showering at night to see if it makes a difference. We just barely made it to the "continental breakfast" (white toast and appleish orange juice) and then went to bang on the guys door at 10:15 .... we finally made it out and took the tube to Waterloo station. We bought our tickets to Windsor Castle for tomorrow. We also bought our tickets on the Eurostar (underchannel train to Paris) for Monday. Unfortunately, to get youth pricing, we had to take the 630 am train or the 130pm train. We chose the morning train (Nick protested but lost) because we don't want to be wandering around Paris at 6 at night, particularly because Nick, Ted & Heathers reservation fell through. So Monday will be a nice and early morning.
From Waterloo we walked across the river to a bar where we grabbed a sandwhich and then Rach and I went to Westminster Abbey. It was by far one of the most amazing places I have ever seen. The pictures in my art history books do absolutely no justice to it. It hardly seemed like a church by any means. Rachel literally got the chills when we realized that it is the place that Princess Diana's funeral took place. There are so many graves/memorials there, but I was surprised they were inside. Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scotts, Henry III, Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Charles Darwin and Oliver Cromwell are all buried there. Or at least have memorials there. The current abbey is from the 13th century and is completely stunning. We couldn't take pictures inside but we did buy postcards. It was the best 6 pounds I have spent on this trip and probably will be for the entire 5 weeks. Simply amazing. The Parliament and Big Ben are right next to the Abbey. Parliament is such a majestic looking building. I have been trying to find a better word, but I just can't come up with anything better. We thought about taking a trip in the London Eye, but it seems overpriced and the line is ridiculous.
We took the tube to Harrod's from there. Very big. Very confusing. Very, very expensive. But we had to see it. (Don't worry Mary & Rex- I got Rachel out purchase free) So that was our day so far. We are trying to stay hydrated, although it is not that warm out. I have been living in my zip up cotton track jacket. I need to find another one in a different color because I am getting really tired of wearing it.
Tomorrow morning Rachel and I are going to Portabello street market before we all go to Windsor in the late morning. Heather comes in tonight so Nick and Ted are going to pick her up around midnight. Rach and I will probably be at the pub next to our hostel having a love affair with our new favorite cider.
I hope no one is tired of reading yet... it is going to be a long five weeks. Especially for me if I have to eat french fries, rather chips, with every meal.
