Day two of four on the stunning Amazon river. Yesterday (11/13) Alex and I boarded the Henry 7th ship which is stocked with 70% goods and 30% people all going to Iquitos the worlds largest city inaccessible by road. The day started at 6:30am as we boarded the boat and we saw exactly what we were getting ourselves into. I was shocked at the overcrowded and unsanitary conditions at first, but after I gave myself a reality check I realized that this was what I need to experience. We strung our hammocks up and realized that we were not the only two foreigners going to Iquitos. Alongside is were a couple, I think? Niko from France and Echo from Taiwan both looking for some jungle time like Alex and I. Soon after settling in I meet the third traveler onboard his name is Hugo and he hails from Sweden. That first day went rather fast like most first do, and the majority of my time was spent observing the crowd of families and crew. Having a group of five foreigners onboard made me happy because the stories to share became much more abundant. Surprisingly I slept well that first night and awoke to find all our gear intact and untampered with. The second day (11/14) dragged a lot more than the first and I knew that boat travel could be that way. The bland taste of the meals and undoubtedly dirt conditions if the kitchen made for one more grueling aspect of the journey. Even though the food was prison like and so were the living conditions I was really getting well acquainted with my bunk mates and even a few adventurous locales on the boat. That night as I lie in my hammock looking out into the endless silhouette of canopy, that rose just above the tress like clockwork everyday at sunset. I knew that good fortune was upon me.
