Soongies' Great Adventure
Most of the exams were over so it was a nice, chilled out day with the kids. It poured with rain last night so their 'play area' was flooded out. Luckily the kids are so good at entertaining themselves no matter the circumstances. Kate read a number of the kids a book which they loved – they were so engaged by it! Later on, one of the kids, Peter, read a book 1:1 to Kate – he absolutely loved this opportunity. Kate asked him if he reads books at home but he told her that he doesn’t have any books. We also played hangman, chinese whispers and heads down thumbs up with the kids. They loved all of these games. One of the volunteers, Laura, brought in her laptop. Lots of the kids had never seen a laptop before so a lot of them were all gathered around as one of the older students (12 yo) typed on Microsoft word. They were so intrigued! The group of volunteers decided we would bring them some special food tomorrow for the kids’ last day of school. We asked them what food they would really like to try. The answer: a sandwich. So 20 eggs, 3 huge avocados and a bag of tomatoes were purchased from the side of the road for $3.50 in preparation for our sandwich making tonight. We went to the supermarket after getting the bus back from the school and bought a few other essentials for the sandwich making and also bought a hula hoop to give to the school for their last day. We also put in some money to purchase a set of speakers for the school so the kids can listen to music whilst dancing. For dinner we walked to the local bar, Harry's Tavern, where we shared nyama choma of 3 kgs of goat as well as ugali and kachumbari (a tomato, red onion and coriander mixture) between 7 of us - costing us a total of $4 each. Tomorrow is the last day of school. We had hoped to set up a school holiday program starting next week so the kids have a safe place where they get fed over the holidays. The head of the charity, Alice, was keen for this. However it looks like it won't go ahead as, according to the chief, schools aren't meant to be open, even this late in the year. Alice purposefully makes the term longer at Safisha as it means the kids are safer and fuller for longer. However the chief doesn't like this so she won't be allowed to open it even longer for the holiday program. Such a shame as all these great ideas just can't get off the ground due to red tape.
