Soongies' Great Adventure
Our first morning at our volunteering was not well organised. We had no idea what our schedule was, where we were meant to be, when breakfast was or when we were going to get orientation. We met a guy named Joe for about 5 seconds who told us that there was a city tour happening today and the other volunteers were going too. There were some other volunteers there who were going on the tour. They were all really nice - David (French Italian), Tilly (Welsh), Amy (English), and Nicole (American). Megan (Kiwi) was another volunteer but she went to her school. The city tour was touristy. We went to the elephant orphanage, the giraffe centre, the crocodile farm and the monkey park. The elephants, giraffes and crocodiles are all conservation projects and it was actually interesting hearing more about the animals. The crocodile guide (David) was hilarious - best sarcastic jokes and also very passionate about reptiles. The monkey park was Kate's worst nightmare. Almost as bad as the cat at the house. Got back to the house in the evening, had dinner of ugali, stew and spinach, and watched The Blind Side with the other volunteers. During the day, we got the sense that the volunteer organisation was not the best. People said that they sometimes didn't get orientation until the third or fourth day, some people who had signed up for particular programs didn't really get to do those programs, and sometimes people just spend the day waiting at the house until someone came along to give them something to do. It's an organisation that seems to not need the volunteers but wants the money that comes along with it. So, we decided that we needed to escape. It was a blessing that we hadn't paid anything at all yet so a great escape was still viable. We sent messages to all the African contacts we had, scanned workaway and helpx websites, looked up flights to Jordan, Maldives and Seychelles. Kate eventually found and contacted Alice, from workaway: https://www.workaway.info/737791394487- en.html. Plans were made, just awaiting confirmation.
