Soongies' Great Adventure
There was still no power this morning so it was cold showers all around! Got a lift into school this morning for day 2 of exams. Some of the interesting questions today: 1. One of the following is not a major language group found in the country of Kenya. Which one is it? A. Bantu B Nilotes C Cus***es D Asians Of course D was the answer! 2. What happens when children start holidays? A. Children feel sad B. Children get a break from school C. Children feel happy D. Children keep going to school Most of the kids in the class responded with A. The sad fact is most of the kids don't enjoy the school holidays as they go without food (as going to school = being fed lunch), they rarely get to play and for a lot of them they no longer have a safe place away from violence. Over lunch it absolutely poured down! The 'play area' was so muddy and the tiles were so dirty. Next minute some of the kids are immediately cleaning up the tiles and keeping everything in order (eg. standing the bin back up) without even being asked. A couple of the volunteers, Laura and Carmen, filmed the children's response to 'what is your wish for when you get older?' - one of the 12 year olds who has a very tough life responded that she prays that she will be able to have money to help the needy (even though she is one of the neediest kids there). It nearly brought tears to Kate's eyes! A break from exams after lunch so lots of signing and dancing and hula hooping with tyres - they are amazing at hula hooping and they thought it was very funny us mzungus giving it a go. During playtime (and any time really) you hear the constant echo of 'cha, cha, cha' from the kids - that is what they use to refer to 'teacher'. 'Cha please help me!', 'Cha cha cha watch me!' We walked home from school and it was soooo muddy under foot. There was so much slipping and sliding and we ended up with incredibly muddy feet and legs! When we got home, power was back on - it had only come back half an hour ago apparently. Late dinner consisted of homemade hot chips and cabbage and a little bit of ugali. A few rounds of playing Mafia to finish off the night. Somehow, Chiara, our Italian volunteer, kept ending up as mafia...
