Soongies' Great Adventure
Another day of volunteering – got to do some more hands on stuff as a few of the volunteers took 5 of the kids to a the elephant orphanage so we were busier. Calvin even ran a class all by himself! During one of the classes for children aged 4-6, the focus was on subtraction. Children had to go up one by one to answer a question such as 6-3. If the child got the question right – the following song was sung, while the child moved their hips to the beat:
"Well done Well done Well done
That is better Better
Another Better Better
Marvellous"
If the child got the question wrong, the following song was sung by all the kids in the class:
“Shame shame shame on you
Look look look at you
Po po po po po”
I nearly had to walk out!
If a child was not paying attention or made a mistake, sometimes the teacher also made them jump like a frog across the classroom whilst holding their ears. Poor kids!
Maybe this discipline works – the kids are soooo well behaved and they always ask for extra homework. Apparently if they bring their work home and there is a cross on the work, some of the kids get beaten. So when we mark their work – we just get the kids to rub out the wrong answer and re-write it correctly so we can give them a tick!
We had a bowl of beans and maize for lunch – a lot of us didn't finish it so we gave the remainders to the kids who were so happy for more food.
After school finished, we went for a short stroll around the neighbourhood and bought some mangoes and pineapple (mangoes are 50c each!) and relaxed before having dinner.
