Soongies' Great Adventure
Today we caught the metatu (a van) some of the way to school – it costs only 20 cents each! And then we walked the rest of the way. We saw some goats and ducks strolling the streets along the way. We were also greeted on the roadside by lots of kids yelling out 'mzungu, mzungu' (white person, white person) and then some running up to us for big cuddles. Today was the first day of exams for the students. They had English, Maths and Christian Religious Education exams today. One of the funniest moments was when Alice, the head of the organisation, was meant to be listening to one of the kids read Kiswahili, but she fell fast asleep. The student just waited patiently for her to wake up to continue where they left off – exams Kenyan style! We got to do some marking of the exams which was a good experience – a lot of the kids seemed to do remarkably well considering the exams are national exams. One of the questions in the English exam really stumped us – ‘What is the opposite of bag?’ Huh?? Had to ask the teacher about this one – he said lots of the kids had been writing pencil case so that was good enough for him! We walked / metatued back home again (and managed to avoid being rained on even though it looked very ominous). The same kids came running up to us for hugs again – I think they must wait by the roadside for a while for the mzungus to walk past! When we got home the water had stopped working (but it came back) and then later the power went out as there was some heavy rains. Just had another relaxing evening in preparation for exam day 2.
