Northern Combination
South Durham & Cestria (SDC) v Liverpool Feds
Today saw us entertaining Liverpool Feds at home. After 4 opening victories in the league the girls were determined to maintain their good start although Liverpool Feds were sure to provide stiff opposition and aim to put a spanner in the works.
SDC started the game well and were immediately on the front foot playing nice football from the back, linking superbly with midfield and our wingers and it was no surprise when we opened the scoring after an exquisite corner from Tracy Swales was met by a bullet header from Zoe Ness in the 11th minute, one of six sixteen year olds in the starting lineup. Ness went on to rattle the crossbar with an expertly took half volley before Rosie Young added a second in the 25th minute after good work from Ness.
SDC were running riot at this point and added a third to their tally after a rasping shot from Swales hit the crossbar with Vicky Wray pouncing on the rebound.
Liverpool Feds nearly got one back when they hit the crossbar themselves with the ball bouncing clear. The girls went in at half time deservedly leading 3-0.
HT SDC 3-0 Liverpool Feds
It has to be said the second half was a bit of a let down. Partly down to us and partly down to Feds who upped their game. SDC were a bit flat and Feds can count themselves a little unlucky with a good penalty shout after a blatant handball. However we still had chances to extend our lead which we didn't take.
Meanwhile the back four, superbly marshalled by Jen Jennings and containing 3 16yr olds, kept it tight at the back keeping Feds at bay.
Overall a good performance, especially the first half, with Feds having more of a say in the second with their impressive number 8 having more of an influence.
Good luck to Feds for the rest of the season and we look forward to the return game.
