FRASER ISLAND 4x4 ADVENTURE SAFARI!!
Our adventure began on the 21st when we arrived at Koala beach resort in Hervey bay. Our starter location from which to visit the largest sand island in the world, Fraser Island.
From here we were given a briefing on our safari and were intoduced to our group. Which consisted of us 7 girls, Andrew (my friend from Sydney who wanted to join our group for the trip, he is going ahead of us now tho), Martin (a german lad who couldn't put enough suntan lotion on!), Shaun (a machanic...apparently) and Jonathon (we loved him!!).
We all sorted out food for the trip (like usual we bought way too much!). This was very stressful! and packed small bags and got reasonably early nights as we had to be up at 6 to pack up our Toyota landcruisers with our food and camping equipment (not an easy task..i am going to brush over it because it is too boring to write about but trust me packing up this 4x4 2 or 3 times a day was a nightmare! Especially as once we were on the island we had to pack it up in the blistering heat with satanic horse flies taking chunks out of us!
Eventually we were on our way to the ferry that was to take us to the island. I say eventually as we actually had to push the car to get it going as someone had left the lights on and the battery had gone. mmm good start!
There were 5 groups in total (we were group c) and on the first day we all headed off together to lake McKenzie first. Which is a beautiful fresh water lake which u can virtually drink. You can only swim in the lakes on Fraser as the sea is full of deadly tiger sharks and extremely poisonous jellyfish. I decided to do the swim from one side of the lake to the other, which is decieving long!!! Andrew was coming with me but was behind me and told me he was gonna go back so i carried on ahead alone. I made it though and had a chat with some guys who had done it a bit ahead of me on the other side. We decided to walk back round (we didn't wanna show off by swimming back of course, it wasn't that we were knackered!!).
We eventually bounded back into our 4x4 (we all had turns at driving these monsters!! Lots of fun!!! Even though we got it stuck a few times and had to push it, and i think we feared for our lives a couple of times as driving over the bumpy sandy terrain was a bit scary..i loved it!) and headed to the shipwrecked remains of the 'Maheno'. Which was wicked as i have never seen a shipwreck before. That night all the groups camped together (yeah i can now set up a tent!! i'm so proud of myself!) and had a BBQ and a bit of a party. Worse nights sleep of my life..i hate sleeping in tents..we didn't even have mats! o Yeah we also had to dig holes and cover them for toileting!! Eugh!
We all woke before 7 because of the sun and the heat and packed up our car and headed to Eli creek where we had our brekkie. This creek was really cool because it was quite long and had a soft current so you could get in one end and float all the way round.
We also went to Indian Head to check out the spectacular views. You are meant to see tiger sharks from here but i didn't see any unfortunatley. However when we got back to the car there was a dingo sniffing around it (we later found out Faye had thrown her tuna sandwich out the window.. you are not supposed to leave any food lying around as it attracts the dingo's, which are wild dogs for you guys that dont know.) But to be honest i was happy as i really wanted to see one while i was there. And he seemed far to cute to be dangerous, i really wanted to stroke him!
That night we weren't able to find the other groups to camp with them, mainly because we were too scared to look as if we stalled we would have to push the 4x4 to get it going again (this could b something to do with the huge lake we went through 3 times so we could get a good photo of the back spash...well it seemed like a good idea at the time! But we did find some other people (with different organisations) and camped with them.
The next day was a rocky start as we had to get nearly everyone camping near us to help us push our 4x4 to get it going, not a task any one was particularly fond of doing at 6.30 in the morning (everyone woke that early every morning due to the sun and scortching hot and claustaphobic tents), i managed to get out of it tho as i was in the driving seat haha!
We then had to go see a mechanic who fixed it (apparently a cable got loose..well done Shaun, thought u were a mechanic???) and we were on our way again through the tropical rainforest heading towards the sandunes in Lake Wabby. Once parked up it was a 30 minute walk to the lake. Here we sat on the sandunes and played gymnasics in the water. Myself, jess, martin and Jonathon decided to swim to the other side.
After that we made our way back to the ferry and home. We all then went out to the only club in town as a team c last night out (a bit of a let down as no one was really in there but oh well!)
Today we are going to go to 1770 for a couple of days. It is a small quaint town which is supposed to be really relaxing. Its named 1770 because it is the 1st town in Queenland Captain cook ported at and that was in the year 1770. There you go, you learn a new thing every day!
Oh and one more thing...Rocking Rob, not sure who u are, but please don't leave dirty messages on my message board again as my parents r not seeing the funny side and its getting tiring deleting them!
