So we have spent the last week in Adelaide staying with Rod and it has been perfect!!
We arrived early last sunday, all very tired as we had decided it would be a good idea to sleep in the airport the night before to catch our 6.30am flight, thinking we would save some money on accomadation...needless to say we did not get a lot of sleep! The first hour was spent messing around on abandoned wheelchairs and then making a number of trips to the vending machines for snacks (boredom= chocolate!!). Eventually we settled down for the night on the hard floors with only our sleeping sheets for comfort...wonderful!
Luckily the flight was short and we arrived at Rods by 11am. Rod, as i think we already mentined we met up the East coast with his two mates Ben (BA) and Ben. He is one of the loveliest people we have met so far. He is 43 (but doesn't look it or act it) and a firefighter. I know u r probably thinking it is a little odd for him let 7 young girls to stay with him but really don't, he is one of the most sweet and genuine people i have eva met! At the house we were introduced to Nadi and Annie, two girls from Canada who Rod was also letting stay with him as a favour for a friend while they looked for an apartment. Shortly after we had settled in, Rods three children came round to meet us (they live with their Mum).
The eldest is Victoria (or Tor for short) who is 13, the Jesse and Darby who are 11 and 10 respectively. They are all the most adorable and well mannered kids in the world and managed to coax us all into a game of dodgeball about 10 mins after they got there. This game basically involves throwing a ball at people on the other team to try and get them out...lots of fun..altho can be a bit painful at times!!
That night we went out with Rod and his friend joey. It was a good night but we were all quite tired from lack of sleep so went home relatively early.
On Monday we made a picnic up and us and Rod and Joey went for a picnic in Victor and then to Horseshoe bay (a beach). Later we went for fish and chips and then to a small island that fairy penguins inhibit. The tour was great and the pingu's were adorable. It was made even better as the sky was completly clear and the amount of stars we saw was pheonominal!! we even saw a couple of shooting stars!!
Wednesday was Valentines day and we organised a bbq for Rod and his family and friends. It was a really great day. We set up the house and garden with balloons and food while Rod was at work and the bbq started around 6ish when people began to arrive. We spent most of the evening playing dodgeball with Rods kids and their friends and then later everyone came outside and had a bit of a singsong. It was so nice being in a family atmosphere rather than in a smelly hostel for a while!!!
Thursday us girls spent the day sunbathing in the garden and playing volleyball, then in the evening we went on a gondala ride on this lake with champagne. It was really beautiful as the sun was just setting and there were lots of gorgeous black swans on the lake.
Friday we went to a different beach and chilled out there for the day and then went on a bit of a bar crawl with Rod and Kym (one of his mates...who used to be a famous Aussie football player don'tcha know!!). It was a great night..esp amusing when the guys kept going on a about a great bar which turned out to be full of middle-aged men and women bopping around to songs we didn't even recognise..needless to say we didn't stay there long, much to the boys dissappointment!
This weekend was relatively uneventful, we watched a few DVD's, the children came round, did some shopping. Gave Rod and the kids some thank you pressies (as we have taken over the kids rooms!) and today we are just sorting out our transport for melbourne. It was nice this morning tho, as the children got us out of bed early to have pancakes with them before they went to school (we all went back to bed again after!!!).
I think i am going to be particularly sad to leave here as we have all become quite comfortable here and definetely have a soft spot for Rods children...and i am definetly not looking forward to being in a hostel again after having the comforts of a home but at the same time i am excited to be arriving in melbourne as i have heard only good things about it!!!
