Dave’s Travel Blog
Both Jean and I had a good sleep. The weather had changed this morning to a cloudy blustery day. We showered, had breakfast, and then I went to deal with the car rental company regarding the tire. Jonathan, the owner here and I both agreed it was probably better to travel with the bad tire with the spare available if necessary. ( cross my fingers). The rental company was hopeless and said to just buy a tire and keep the bill. So, we searched the net for tire companies in the first town we come to after leaving Lesotho. 2 companies each had a tire that was the same size so I picked one and that is where we will go tomorrow. 130 km of paved road and then 30 km of bad dirt road. (Still keeping my fingers crossed) after all of this was straightened out, Jean and I went for a 3 hour pony ride to the falls called Maletsuyane Falls which has a 204 meter drop. If one is brave, you can abseil down the side. It is the longest commercial abseil in the world, as recognized by the Guinness Record book. When we arrived there after an hour on the ponies, Jean and I thought our legs had turned to jelly. I think our guide Eric was quite amused. Going to the falls, we passed 2 villages and saw paths leading to more. There is a steady stream of people walking, riding ponies, and leading burros loaded with maize or wheat which they take to town to be ground so they can bake with it. Can you imagine walking 10km one way 5 times a week over very steep terrain to go to work. The people are so amazing, happy even with the hardships they endure. When we got back, I changed the tyre ( as they spell it here) and then we went for lunch. Met a couple there who own a little ski resort in The north of Lesotho. He is from Austria and she is from Southern California. They are on holidays and are doing some mountain biking around the country. Jean just came back from buying some gifts to take back with us. All the crafts are made by the locals. The resort is doing some repairs to a couple buildings so there is a craftsman building the thatch on the roof. It is quite fascinating to watch. It is certainly not a one day job and the fellow is so precise in his work. It looks so good when it is finished. Time to do some postcards for my grandkids so will close this for now.

Bill Side wall damage to a tire generally means you need a tire replacement. You made a good decision! Good luck on the rest of the journey.
Dale Johnston Oh Jean you look so cool! Spectacular scenery--enjoying your photos and blog Dave. Choir happy to receive your hugs Jean--Love Dale
