Dave’s Travel Blog
Well, I think I finally got the spelling right for this town! We got up early this morning and did the dawn game drive at 6am. We were very successful as we saw several elephants, Cape buffalo, warthogs, kudu, a tortoise, and the red hartebeest. After showering at our chalet and eating some breakfast, we started on the drive through the Karoo to Graaff Reinet. The Karoo was magnificent and got even better as we got to Graaff Reinet. We arrived around lunchtime and had lunch at the Drostdy hotel. The hotel was built in 1806 and has been completely rebuilt (for about $10 million cdn from what I have been told). It is the height of luxury and very posh. After lunch we booked into our B&B and then explored the town. Graaff Reinet was founded in 1786 and is the oldest town in the Eastern Cape. The Dutch Reformed Church has been rebuilt 3 times and the latest version is supposed to resemble Salisbury Cathedral in England. It is a very impressive building! We also visited Reinet House which is a museum in town but once was the parsonage for Dutch Reformed Church and was built in 1812. Around 4:30pm we drove to Camdeboo National Park and went to the Valley of Desolation. It is the site of some spectacular rock formations and also has a lookout that looks out over Graaff Reinet. It was definitely one of the highlights of our tour. The dolrite columns rise 120 meters above the valley floor. The vista was breathtaking!

Dale Johnston Dave I hope you will have a showing when you get home--it would be awesome to see your pictures on a large screen! The Dutch Reformed Church is majestic--I've been to Salisbury Cathedral. I think Jean will be happy to see so many elephants! Dale Johnston
Petries You and Jean seem to be having the adventure of a lifetime. Good for you!! The comments and pictures remind me of my trips to SA many years ago. Thanks for keeping us entertained. I agree with Dale. You should probably put on a slide show for us all when you get home. Stay safe. Bob & Carol Petrie
dg_wood Thank you Dale and the Petries. It's a good idea. We will have to choose from several thousand pictures taken so far. Such a picturesque place!
Nita & Kelly Hear, hear! I second (third?) the slide show comment! Potluck dessert & travel pics!
