Dave’s Travel Blog
Our hostess served a delicious breakfast and then, prior to leaving, we had a long chat with Greg , the owner of our B&B about life in Canada versus life in South Africa. The reason they live in Graaff Reinet is because it is one of the safest towns in South Africa. He said one can go out at night and not be worried about safety. We showed him some photos of our house and he exclaimed "oh, no walls or wire fences!" Our trip to Bethulie was a long drive and after about 100km, we left the Karoo and drove through very flat farming country with mountains in the distance. It took us some time to find our B&B as we missed the turn and went into the town. Apart from the Main Street, all the streets are dirt roads which have not seen a grader in a very long time. We finally found our B&B one block from the local prison! It was quite a beautiful home and our accommodations were very clean and very well appointed. The final in the World Rugby was to be played this day so Jean turned on the tv and we watched the opening ceremonies before going out to find dinner. Good luck on that in Bethulie on a Sunday evening!! There was one place open, a bar filled with guys smoking and watching the rugby game. So we went to the supermarket and bought some canned tuna, grapes, cereal, milk, and fruit juice. I had cereal and Jean had a tuna sandwich. The grapes turned to be terrible but Jean had also bought some cherry tomatoes. That was our dinner as we watched the All-backs beat the Australian team. For a while, it looked like it would be a close game as Australia pulled within 4 points but then the All-blacks ran away with the game winning 34-17. Tomorrow we drive to Semenkong in Lesotho.

Joanne Leatherdale The bird watcher loves the picture of the cranes. There are some of the most spectacular birds in Africa. The impression of scenery is vastness but not like Canada where the trees block the view of the expanse. Nice to have conversations with your B&B hosts to learn about their lives.
Darryl Your pictures in each of the stops have been delightful. Thanks for taking the time to add the photos and the commentary. I have really enjoyed al of them even though I have not added comments each time. There was snow on the Fly Hills yesterday morning. Winter is coming. We also had a lovely Covenanting Service for Jenny. It was a great time.
