Today, we were picked up by our guide, Paul Hofman, to tour the Cape Peninsula. We left about 9:30am and he took us first to Bo-Kaap which is a Malay community where non-indentured slaves settled the 1760's. It is a very colorful area with brightly painted houses and old cobblestone streets. We then went to a camera store to buy Jean an additional memory card for her camera. The store has to be the best camera store I have ever been in. You need a particular camera? 9.9 out of 10 this store has it! After picking up the card, we headed for the cape peninsula. We began our tour at Constanzia along Cecil Rhodes Drive to Muizenberg and then past Saint James to Kalk Bay where we stopped for a walkabout and Paul and I each had an ice cream cone. We then continued through Simon's Town to Boulder Beach where we stopped to see the penguins. We returned to Simon's Town to have lunch. I had calamari and chips and Jean had hake and chips. Paul told us this was the best fish and chip shop in SA and I would agree that the food was really excellent. We were also serenaded by a group of men sounding very much like Ladysmith Black Mombasa who, according to Paul, sang a couple of religious songs. After lunch, we continued on our way, eventually ending up in Table Mountain National Park where we saw Cape Good Hope and Cape Point Lighthouse. They had a funicular one could take up to the lighthouse or you could walk. We chose to walk and it was quite an adventure! The wind was howling with very very strong gusts of wind coming at you as you climbed up to the lighthouse. Coming back down was much easier as we had the wind at our back. We then continued on our way going over Red Hill which took us eventually to Noordhoek and on to Chapman's Peak Drive which is a 9km drive with 114 curves. Saw some really spectacular views along this road. We arrived in Hout Bay and then Camps Bay and then took a road that took us to Signal Hill which gave us some amazing views of Cape Town and area. Today was really quite a spectacular day and a fantastic end to our stay in Cape Town. We were so lucky to have a really fantastic guide, Paul, to show us around the Peninsula. He really added the perfect touch with his great knowledge of the history of the area. When we arrived back at the B&B, he came inside and suggested some routes to Swellendam that would give us the most scenic routes.

Paul Dave, thank you for the kind words. It was an absolute pleasure to share in your and Jeans journey. I really enjoyed sharing the little places with you. and boy that ice cream was great..glad Jean didn't buy anything in Kalk Bay shops otherwise we would have been limited to one scoop. Ha Ha One another note, yesterday I spent my time in the park exploring all the little side roads that we generally dont go down on the Cape Point trip and found some really great spots with overnight accommodation. Next Time.
dg_wood Paul, you are a true professional. When I first read your comments, I though it was our friend Paul in Canada who has a sense of humor where he would pretend to be our guide. You made our stay in Cape Town and the trip out to the Point most memorable! Your concern for our safety with the unrest was most appreciated. Maybe some day we can reciprocate and give you a tour of the Rockies! Thank you again!
