Woke up to news of a new government in Canada. Quite a resurgence for the Liberal party! Today, Jean and I decided to do,a walking tour of Capetown. As we started off, a couple from Washington State who are staying at our B&B joined us. We started by going to an area called the Company Gardens. Back in 1652, the Dutch East India Company decided to set up a halfway point for their ships going to India and the Orient so they could replenish their supplies as the trip took about 1-1/2 years to complete. The gardens were set up to provide fresh vegetables and fruit for the ships. It is now a botanical garden. I had to do some banking business which took a substantial period of time as I discovered I could not transfer money from one bank to another of a different name so had to hike to where the other bank was. Jean and I continued on exploring the old area of Capetown and ended up at the castle of Good Hope. The governor of the Cape decided in 1666 to build fortifications to protect Dutch interests from the English and the French. It was completed in 1679. The English chose not to attack the fort which at the time was right at the waters edge. (It sits now 1 kilometer from the water thanks to modern day land reclamation). The English landed at False Bay and over landed to the fort capturing it without a shot being fired. Today, it is the headquarters for the South African Defence Force, western cape division. We took a tour of the facility which is huge and shaped like a pentagon. Tomorrow, they begin shooting a remake of "Roots" at the castle. There were many props to be used in the movie laying around so it was easy to imagine life in those days. Particularly grizzly were the comments by the tour guide as to the ways they used to torture people to get a confession from those who were accused of a crime. Crimes such as not bowing to a passing master, or looking at one of the wife of a master. The day got pretty hot by this time so we hiked back to our B&B. We walked up to a quaint little cafe and had BLT's and I had a chocolate malted milk shake. Haven't had one of those for many many years! In the evening, we took a taxi to Bellville to see a rehearsal for the Tygerberg Children's Choir. There are 109 kids in the choir and it was truly a wonderful experience to hear them sing. They snag a special song for Jean to honor her presence. Tomorrow we will tour around the area on a blue HoHo bus which will take us into the wine growing areas.
