What a surprise Lamego has been. A real highlight of the trip. The amount of fruit growing on trees on the way up here was gorgeous. Peaches, lemons, apples, figs, lemons. And grapevines as far as you can see, with so many grapes hanging off them.
We stayed at a sort of Manor house. It was like staying with a rich and glamerous aunt, the type that would be featured in Portuguese 'Hello'. You're free to wander around their house which is packed with antiques that are all for sale. It's like sleeping in a giant sweet shop! You dine in one of the many grand dining rooms with private butlers all the while being made to feel like you're at home. You drink and eat as much as you feel like and the incredible wine is from the estate, although unfortunately not yet exported. The children of the house play in the hallways and the well behaved Ridgebacks lounge around outside.
The Duoro river and the region surrounding it is stunning. Hills that meet the river. The Portugese drivers are crazy, they actually drive in the middle of the road.
We'll definately be back here one day! Off to Valladolid in Spain tomorrow. Less than two weeks to go until we're home.
