Today we started with an 8.4km guided hike at Cheticamp. We were taken up a steep climb past a beautiful stream and through gorgeous trees and ferns. The terrain was a little tricky at times as we had to cross the stream a few times and had to negotiate slippery bridges and rocks. There was quite a group of us and we kept a pretty fast pace so every time I stopped to take photos I almost had to run to catch up again! It was interesting getting near the top as there it became evident there were moose - the trees had been eaten down - or eaten around the middle. We didn't see any as they will avoid groups of people and we also didn't see any coyotes. There was a young girl killed by coyotes in a Cape Breton national park a couple of years ago while hiking alone, so everyone is mindful of them and hikers are asked to not discard any rubbish or food along the way that might encourage coyotes to hang around the trails. We were told that if we were confronted to stare them down and not to run (as you would a dog). I must admit I would be too chicken to walk alone. Anyway it was a great walk and the views from the top were stunning.
The hike took about 4 hours so by the time we got back we were starving (and tired!) and headed to a cute little restaurant that looks like a windmill. Cheticamp has some really gorgeous little shops and houses. I can recommend a great gift shop called Flora's.
Back on the road to our next stop Mabou. The drive was lovely - saw men flyfishing for salmon in a beautiful little river and stopped to take some photos.
We arrived at our B&B which is a cattle farm - the house was built by the man's great grandfather in the 1800's.
After checking in we found a place up the road for dinner and then went to our Celtic Colours show 'Close to the Floor'. It was supposed to be dancing but there was quite a significant part that was music - very good. One group of dancers were First Nations people from Manitoba and boy were they good! The 6 year old girl was very cute.
Really nice returning to the farm afterwards and I went to sleep listening to the cows.
The next day we will be driving all the way back to Fredericton which is a full day trip so I may not have much to report!
