A very early start to get to Grand Central Station by 7am but then didn't leave until after 8 as the tour guide didn't show up for work! But finally away we went to Pennsylvania for the day.
First stop was Philadelphia where we had a quick breakfast and went to Independence Hall. We did a tour (seemed a bit rushed - I think they were trying to make up time) but it was interesting. Saw the Liberty Bell and then drove through Chinatown to the Philadelphia Museum of Art where the 'Rocky' steps are along with a statue of Stallone as Rocky.
We stopped at Elreth's Alley which is the oldest street in America. Very small but sweet and has been well looked after.
On then to a town called Intercourse where an Amish community farm and reside. The countryside is beautiful and the homes gorgeous. There was a lot of washing hanging out at most of the farms with the long dresses flapping in the wind. We saw several Amish riding buggies and walking around or tending their farms. They plough their corn and wheat using horses although we did see a young woman using a whipper snipper - I guess that job was just too big to do by hand - mind you she was doing the edges of a big paddock!
We went on a buggy ride driven by a very nice Amish man who took us to his farm and explained many facets of his life which was so interesting. His wife greeted us with a basket of chocolate chip biscuits, pretzels and lemonade - for sale at $2 so we all bought something.
Back to Kettle Kitchen Village which has little shops so we could eat before heading back to New York. We didn't get back until about 8.30 or so but it was a really good day :-))
