The last two days have been spent on a motorcycle tour from Hue to Hoi An. Our trip took us through many different villages that are way off the beaten path and even to some major tourist attractions.
It poured rain the first day! Luckily our tour guide, Nho, gave us each a rain poncho and rain pants to help keep us dry. Once out of the city, our first stop was a small fishing village where whole families live on small fishing boats. Nho told us that the village had a problem because the residents were having too many kids. The government came in to educate the locals about using condoms and used his thumb to demonstrate how to put one on. Unfortunately, when the educator returned 8 months later, he found that the condoms had not worked as many of the women were pregnant. When he inquired as to why they were pregnant, the locals told him that, while the condoms were great for protecting their thumbs, they don't tend to have sex with that particular part of their bodies. I wish I had a video of Nho explaining this story in his broken English because he had to use several explicit hand actions to get his point across. Wow, did we have a laugh!
After gathering ourselves we headed off to a remote village in the mountains. The villagers built their huts along on top of the rocks on rapids. The river flows from the top of the mountain and sends crystal clear, clean water through the village. The area was called Elephant falls and it was awesome!
Then it was off to our hotel in Da nang for the night. Nho took us to some great traditional Vietnamese restaurants throughout the trip, and supper the first night was as good as the rest.
The next day was still cloudy but not raining. We headed up some amazing mountain roads where the scenery was unbelievable. We stopped at the side of the road and had some freshly picked pineapple from a farm right there on the mountain. Then we moved on to a quick rice paper making lesson from this ridiculously cute woman that Nho knew. We got to eat our creations when they were ready! Last but not least, we headed toward Hoi An for our final stop. This is where the trip got slightly expensive.
