We had an early morning this morning to try to see some of Rome before the heat hit, as they are having some sort of summer heat wave at the moment and I'm running precariously close to not having any sweat free clothes left! Our hotel is positioned on the outskirts of Rome so we drove to the metro station and took the train into Rome. Unfortunately the train line was broken or blocked or something and as we are not Italian language specialists we ended up doing an extra couple of stops and a bus to get to Rome.
It was about 9:30 when we hit Rome and it was already getting warm but we did not let that get us down so we started walking, Rome has a lot of history and there are old monuments, museums and ruins at the end of every street! So we just wandered through the streets and saw what we wanted to see. The climax of my day was seeing the Colosseum, it is old huge and really really awesome! It is similar to the MCG, just built a few thousand years before and built to last!
We had a look at the roman forum on the way out which was ok but it did seem like someone had just scattered pieces of ancient archeological rock all over the place and said it was somewhere significant! Not much was left standing over the years before they decided to exhibit the area, so its not exactly spectacular but the big white marble building behind it certainly is.
We had a well bloody needed rest for a beer and some pizza at about 6 pm it was very tasty but most importantly we could rest our feet, it was a long day of walking in the heat and we were very happy to get back to the hotel and have a shower. Tomorrow is the Vatican and then Naples.
