Wish You Were Here!
Hello to all once again, from Chaing Mai.
Since the last entry I have left Bangkok, visited Chaing Mai and been on a forest treck in Northen Thaiand.
Left Bangkok, in the rain, on a night bus destined for Chaing Mai on Sunday night at 6pm. On route got talking to a guy from Australia (yet another Oz'y) called Dan. We arrive in Chaing Mai, with little sleep and decide to stay at a hotel (nice place---the name) just outside the main city. We book a treck leaving the city on the Wednesday and head off to tour the city. Once in the centre me and Dan decide to rent scooters for the day and after a trip round the city head for a couple of the well known sites. Visited an umbrella market, then to a temple up in the hills of the city looking out at roof tops and the landscape (which was very cool). On the way back we visited Chaing Mai zoo, which was not at all good, but funny (most of the animals were missing and couldn't find way round). In the night we visited the famous night market, which was incredible, bought loads, then to the nearest pub for a few ale's.
The following day we had a Thai cookery class on the cards, but the state we were in meant that it was very difficult to get up out of bed. Once at the class, however, we started to come around, with the fantastic meals we were preparing and the Sergent like cokkery teacher. After an immense amount of food intake, we headed back to the hotel and the following night went fairly the sameas the last, with beer, food and shooping (and very late to bed).
Wednesday was the beginning of our treck, and once again proved difficult at the beginning, with the lack of sleep and amount of alcohol the previous night. Arrived at a hill tribe village to screaming local kids and a very cool atmosphere. From there we headed for our fisrt village, through forests, waterfalls and hills. The village was extremly peaceful and relaxing, and our that night were given a show by the local kids, of traditional dancing.
The next day included a trip to a waterfall, with a pool to swim in, an elephant ride through the forests and much more incredible scenary of northen Thailands hills. The final trecking day involved more walking and finally, a bamboo raft down one of the rivers, which although very tirring was lots of fun.
We got back to Chaing Mai at 5pm and headed for town again, but not a heavy night as me and Dan were fairly shattered. On the way back to the hotel, saw a stall on the side of the road selling all types of insects and bugs to eat, so enjoyed a meal of crickets and worms (tasted quite sketchy).
At the moment am still in Chaing Mai but am flying to Bangkok tomorrow (Sun) to head for the islands and beaches.
Once again hope all is well.
